Our purpose
The purpose of Potra Law Firm is to assist any person, church, nonprofit organization or business entity in knowing and asserting their legal rights within the bounds of the law. Much can be done when one knows his or her legal rights.
All persons are born with certain fundamental and inalienable rights: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Regardless of nationality, color or culture, these rights cannot and should not be taken away from any individual. Governments do not have the right to impinge on a person’s fundamental rights. When they do, and such governments do exist today, those governments lose their legitimacy and the individual may seek other means to preserve his or her fundamental rights. Governments exist to ensure that these, the fundamental rights, are preserved and promoted. Many flood to the gates of this country because such rights, embedded in the very fabric of a person’s existence, are recognized and preserved, more so here, in the United States, than in other countries in the world.
Freedom is something some of us take for granted today. Not so with many immigrants who fled their countries, left behind their families, homes, friends, their own cultures and careers in order to seek liberty and the pursuit of happiness. America is the one land that millions from all over the world are dreaming about, and some are dying in their attempts to reach her shores. Most of these immigrants believe that here in America, they can seek freedom from oppressive governments, freedom of conscience, freedom to worship and assemble, and freedom to live a peaceful and productive life.
Also, these persons believe that here in America, they can seek happiness for their lives and the lives of their loved ones. On one side, this should make all Americans proud of this great land. They should strive to uphold and maintain the land of the free as free as she can be. Welcoming the alien and helping her pursue her fundamental freedoms and happiness, is something that makes a nation unique and blessed. On the other side, the alien should strive to prove herself worthy of this acceptance. The alien should work hard, at times harder than others, to understand and appreciate the opportunities for personal, educational, professional and social fulfillment.
Attorney Potra, himself, is a first generation immigrant. He understands the yearning for freedom and the pursuit of happiness. He experienced firsthand the pains of uncertainty, refugee camps and long waiting for an interview and the issuing of a visa. It was not easy. He understands the anguish of many who knock at the door of diverse opportunities. He understands the risks and the high stakes in the lives of many immigrants. He can feel what they feel because he, himself, had lived what they now live.
